About Me

About me:
My dad is a born wanderer – loves to get in the car and see what there is to see. My mom's the note and picture taker.  Clearly, it’s all genetic because I do too. Good thing because I travel quite a bit for work and for fun. I’m no travel expert, but I do like to make notes, take photos and share tips on where to go and what to see. And enough people have asked for the same advice that I thought it might be easier and more fun to post advice from my journeys online.

My travel philosophy:
  • When you say “road trip,” I say “mixtapes.”
  • I believe J.R.R. Tolkien was right: “Not all who wander are lost.”
  • In fact, I’m pretty awesome at navigating by instinct, so GPS devices offend me. But, Google maps on my iPhone? Love it.
  • I thoroughly appreciate luxury hotels, amenities and room service, but I don’t need them.  As long as it's clean and comfortable, I'm good.  (That said, for the record, the Parker Palm Springs and Fairmont San Francisco are tied for best toiletries)
  • A city view?  Great, if you can get it, but I'm generally not in my room long enough to shell out extra for it.  But a balcony view of the ocean?  Worth it every single time.
  • Also totally worth it: learning how to travel carry-on, even for long trips.
Where do I travel?
  • I live in San Francisco, but I travel home to see the folks in Boston and the Cape several times a year.
  • For personal vacations, I alternate between two types of trips: extended stays exploring a foreign place, or emptying my brain in the sand/pool and refilling it with a bag of books and a good drink.
  • I’m also tagging along on my husband’s pursuit of 50 marathons in 50 states. I love plotting the logistics of how many times I can see him along the course and what can I see along the way. Since he’s usually resting both the day before and afternoon after the event, that gives me time to explore on my own.
  • In addition to personal vacations and occasional weekend jaunts, I’m extremely lucky that my job takes me to random and amazing places. As a writer/producer, I travel several times a year to film incentive trip and convention destinations (as well as the events themselves) – but some of the best assignments are to small towns profiling real people making a difference for people and the planet. For work trips, I’m usually on a tight schedule from sunup to sundown (golden hour – the prettiest time of day to film) – but if there’s any free time at all (even just for dinner), I like to explore what the locals like.
